Job Title or Skills Set Required


Primary Function: The Sports & Recreation Manager is responsible for overseeing all athletic, health, wellness and training programs that reflect the interests and needs of club members and staff of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Manatee County. The Sports & Recreation Manager’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to agency-wide development, indoor and outdoor athletics, club recreation programs, organized sports, team building, coaching leadership and budget management planning.
Specific responsibilities include working with colleagues across the organization while providing leadership and supervision. This position will develop the quality, consistency, and program performance of organized sports and related programming.
• Implement the agency-wide application of all Healthy Lifestyle programs across multiple club sites.
• Design and implement a minimum of 5 sports camps each calendar year.
• Develop and implement a minimum of 5 agency-wide organized sports leagues annually.
• Recruit and train volunteers to assist with program implementation and coaching.
• Conduct goals and measurable assessments (BMI, Triple Play Tests, etc.) as required.
• Work with program partners to provide increased access to sports, fitness, recreation, and healthy lifestyles.
• Recommend and requisition supplies needed for assigned area(s).
• Embed the 5 key elements of positive Youth Development into all programs and activities.
• Demonstrate leadership to ensure proper conduct, safety, and development of members.
• Coordinate necessary volunteers to support programs.
• Operate all programs at the highest professional level consistent with the Boys & Girls Club’s principles and youth development strategy.
• Become certified as a CPR Instructor and instruct/maintain CPR Trainings for Staff.

• Oversee the organization and maintenance of recreational athletic equipment and Club facilities.
• Oversee volunteers to ensure maximum safety and positive collaborative relationships with community partners.
• Monitor collaborative programs with volunteers and staff, providing ongoing feedback and appraisal.
• Identify and support training and development opportunities for volunteers and staff.
• Oversee proper record keeping and reporting, including activities and events conducted, breakdowns of daily participation figures, notable achievements and any problems/issues.
• Plan, implement, and promote Club programs including scheduling games for organized sports, ensuring a robust Club healthy lifestyles program, and developing and overseeing a range of fitness and recreational programs.
• Provide game-day supervision and involvement in home contests, tournaments, and exhibitions.
• Oversee proper scheduling regarding volume, fairness, and physical limitations; as well as oversee travel arrangements for athletic events.
• Establish and maintain standards of conduct and practice rules for all Club athletes and extended volunteers.
• Monitor strict observances of health, safety and legal requirements for athletic program operations with a goal of risk assessment and risk reduction.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS: (not all inclusive)
• Four year degree in physical education or related field from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience.
• A minimum of one year work experience in a Boys & Girls Club or similar organization planning and supervising activities based on the developmental needs of youth.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Demonstrated organizational, staff and project management abilities.
• Ability to implement knowledge of youth development.
• Ability to deal effectively and professionally with the general public, other staff, supervisors and members.
• Demonstrate a physical ability to supervise and actively interact with youth.
• Demonstrate specific educational or physical skills and the ability to effectively teach those skills.
• Certified in CPR and First Aid. Certified Instructor is a plus.
• Basic knowledge of technology.
• Must have ability to work weekends.
• Professionalism in dealing with varied situations.
• Belief in the mission, principles, values and standards of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Manatee County.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, community groups, and other related agencies.
• Must be comfortable performing multi-faceted projects in conjunction with day-to-day activities.
• Valid State Driver’s License.
• Pass pre-employment background check and drug test.
• Obtain strong Work Ethic, Positive Attitude, High Level of Energy and Flexibility.

• Required to stand, walk, sit and run in response to varies athletic and coaching conditions.
• Occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
• Sustain high noise volumes responsive to a work environment with large groups of children inside and outside of Club settings.
• Expected to lift, carry, and manage equipment and supplies and participate in and train others in the rules of multi specific sports.
• Participate and lead strenuous physical activities, both indoors and out.
