What is the CARES Act?
The CARES Act, or Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, is federal legislation that provides a variety of financial support to individuals and businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The CARES Act established and funded the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) to provide emergency financial assistance to post-secondary students. Manatee Technical College was allocated funds under this Act to be awarded to students who are experiencing hardship due to the coronavirus.
Who is eligible for CARES Act funds?
Students who meet basic eligibility criteria for federal financial aid are eligible. These are students enrolled in programs that consist of 600 hours or more and who have submitted a 2019-2020 FAFSA application by June 1, 2020t in order to be eligible for the funding. Students must also meet federal aid eligibility criteria, including but not limited to:
1. Being a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen (i.e. legal permanent resident)
2. Have a valid Social Security number
3. Have a high school diploma, GED or completion of high school in an approved homeschool setting.
4. Enrolled in a 600 hour or more clock hour program.
5. Must have been enrolled as of April 6, 2020.
6. You cannot be in default of a Federal Student Loan.
7. Must have registered for Selective Service, if male.
8. Must have been meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress on April 6, 2020
9. Cannot exceed Pell Grant lifetime usage
10. Cannot owe an overpayment on any Federal Aid Program.
What if I haven’t submitted a FAFSA for 2019-2020?
Students may still be eligible for CARES Act funding but must submit a FAFSA application by the June 1st deadline. Completed applications typically take the Department of Education 48-72 hours to process. If you are just now completing a FAFSA application, contact Financial Aid at firstname.lastname@example.org to ensure your eligibility is determined before the deadline.
How long before I know if I am awarded CARES Act Funds?
If you have submitted a FAFSA, and have met all the above guidelines, the award will show in your student portal in 1-2 weeks. Due to the anticipated high number of students to be awarded, we expect that it will be 2-3 weeks before students will receive their money.
How will I receive CARES Act funding?
Checks will be mailed directly to the students to the mailing address on record. If there are any changes that need to be made to your mailing address, be sure to update as soon as possible.
How much funding from CARES Act will I get?
The award amount will be determined by the number of eligible students and available funding.
I completed my program on 4/20/2020; am I still eligible to receive emergency grant funding?
Yes. Students that were enrolled in a qualified program on 4/6/2020 are eligible to receive the funding.
How is MTC distributing the CARES act funding?
MTC will be following the guidelines outlined in the federal legislation. Students whose education has been disrupted due to COVID-19 will be given the opportunity to receive this funding.
