MTC students win 1st & 3rd in nation, 2023 SkillsUSA

Second year in a row an MTC student placed 1st in CNC 5-Axis Milling Programmer

(Bradenton, FL—June 27, 2023) Manatee Technical College student Arik Edstrom placed first in the nation in the CNC 5-Axis Milling Programmer contest at the 2023 SkillsUSA Championships in Atlanta—a back-to-back win for Edstrom, who placed first in the state in April. An MTC student placed 1st in the nation in this event last year also.

Electrician student Luciano Calvillo placed third in the nation in the Electrical Construction Wiring contest after having placed second in the state.

SkillsUSA is the largest gathering of America’s future skilled workforce. The contests consisted of three rigorous days of competition that lasted into the evening.

Two other MTC students competed in the national championships. Paula Cardenas competed in the Culinary Arts contest and finished 6th against students from the Culinary Institute of America and four-year universities. Jason Watkins competed in the 3-Axis CNC Milling contest; he received a SkillPoint certificate for his accomplishments.

All MTC contestants competed in the college division. Competition description:
CNC 5-Axis Milling Programmer: Competitors are evaluated on their ability to independently plan and program jobs for 5-Axis CNC (Computer Numerical Control) milling machines and provide instructions for operators to execute. They program part features and generate NC code using CAM software, troubleshoot G-code programming errors, interpret prints (including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing or GD&T), measure/gauge parts, and demonstrate their theoretical knowledge of 5-Axis CNC milling machine configuration, setup and operation. Luciano Calvillo placed 3rd in the nation in the college-division Electrical Construction Wiring competition at the 2023 SkillsUSA Championships in Atlanta. He will graduate June 29, 2023. Calvillo has already been hired by a local electrical contractor. (1 photo)
