A Certified Firefighter who has not been employed for 4 years from last date of employment or date of certification, or maintained a current and valid fire service instructor certificate, instruct at least 40 hours during the 4 year period and provide proof of such instruction to the division, which proof must be registered in an electronic database designated by the division, or successfully complete a refresher course consisting of a minimum of 40 hours of training to be prescribed by rule or within 6 months before the 4 year period expires, and shall successfully retake and pass the minimum Standards Practical Course Examination.

An Application for Practical Examination for Retention of Firefighter Certification Form (DFS-K4-1308) is required, along with the Medical Examination (DFS-K4-1022). The retention examination is offered four times a year at the Florida State Fire College. Please contact the Bureau of Fire Standards for an application.

Please note, you are required to submit fingerprints (digitally) with the Application for Practical Examination for Retention of Firefighter Certification Form (DFS-K4-1308) For a volunteer firefighter, the certified firefighter must be active for a cumulative six months within a 4 year period.
